Résumé des livres

I.1 I’m the king of the castle

From the day they met, Charles kingshaw and Edmund Hooper hate each other.

Kingshaw does not want to live in Hooper’s ugly house. And each day, Hooper makes sure Kingshaw is unhappy.

Kingshaw decides to run away. But first he goes to Hang Wood. He has to go – Hooper has dared him to go…

I.2 A marriage of convenience and other stories

Maugham introduces us to five characters and their unusual lives –

…A French who has to find a wife quickly.

…German Harry who lives alone on the island of Trebucket.

…Wilson, who has decided to die when he is sixty.

…Mabel, who follows her fiancé around the world.

…An American who is hiding in an Italian village.

I.3 Banker

I had to tell the Chairman and Board of Directors at the bank. I had recommended the loan. It had been my decision to lend the money to buy the stallion.

“FIVE…MILLION…POUNDS!” said one of the directors slowly. “ And you’ve lost it on a horse!”

I.4 The wells of Pandi Warra

The village of Pandi Warra lay on the Southern edge of the Great Desert. To the east of the village were hills and mountains. And away in the far distance, rising up above the mountains, was the White Mountain.

Setran, the village story-teller, remembered everything that had happened in the village of Pandi Warra.

He was a very old man and his memories went back, and back. In the evenings, the children sat beneath the huge baobab tree and they listened to Setran’s stories.

I.5 Footprints in the jungle and other stories

Footprints in the jungle

Someone had murdered Bronson in the jungle. But why? Bronson’s money was not been stolen nor was his watch. Perhaps the footprints will give an answer to the mystery.

The Taipan

When the taipan sees some Chinese workmen digging a grave, he is surprised. What happens next comes as a shock.

Guilia lazzari

Chandra Lal has caused a lot of trouble in India. By 1915 the British have thought of a way to capture him. His mistake is to fall in love with Guilia lazzari.

I.6 The franchise affair

There were more than a hundred people in the courtroom. It was very warm but everyone sat very still.

Betty Kane went into the witness box and took the oath. She was sweet and innocent.

Robert knew where she had been in those missing weeks. But he still found it hard to believe. What a story it was going to be for the story papers!

I.7 Oliver Twist

A very old man was standing near the fire. He turned quickly as the two boys came into the room.

“Fagin, this is my new friend, Oliver Twist,» the Dodger said.

The old smiled at Oliver. “Very pleased to see you, Oliver my dear,” the old man said. “Come nearer to the fire, my boy”.

Oliver stared round the dirty room. There was a rope tied across one corner of the room. Many brightly-coloured silk handkerchiefs were hanging over the rope.

Fagin smiled again.

“My handkerchiefs are pretty, aren’t they, Oliver?” he said. And they’re all waiting to be washed!”

To Oliver’s surprise, all the boys laughed.

I.8 The queen of spades and other stories

Pushkin, the great Russian poet and storyteller, brings us the magic and adventure of 19th century Russia.

The stories tell of army life and romance. Bored young army officers fight with each other. And young lovers meet in secret.

I.9 When rain clouds gather

The weather was terribly hot. Hot winds blew and the air was full of red dust. But everyone knew the hottest weather came before the rain. In September the rain clouds would gather.

But September came and there were rain clouds in the sky.

At the cattle posts, far out in the bush, the wells began to dry up and the cattle began to die…

I.10 The Bonetti inheritance

“I’d like to make the agreement with you, “Pagani said. “A special business agreement. You could make a lot of money”.

Mario’s eyes shone with greed.

“Are you interested?” Pagani asked calmly.

“Oh yes, certainly,” Mario said.

“It’s an agreement that must be kept secret; you must tell no one about it, or there’ll be trouble”.

“With the police?” asked Mario.

“Perhaps,” said Pagani. “Are you still interested? There won’t be much trouble for you. And you can make a lot of money”.

“How much?” asked Mario.

“A fortune”.
